It's probably best to use Baltic Birch 1/2" ply, but other high-quality plywood could also work just fine. You only need to hollow out the areas near the blade if you want to raise the blade all the way up, which I rarely do. That said, you do need to hollow out for the part that attaches to the dust port, and that cut-out needs to be elongated in the ZCI's that are cut at angles, for miters.
Are these made out of standard 1/2" ply? Did you find a need to route any relief areas in the bottom like the stock plates?
